Three types of muscle tissues within the animal body
Muscles tissues are distributed all across the body, this means they all have different functions. These tissues play a big part in some of the most important actions, for example pumping blood around the body. Along with the main three types of muscle tissues there are slow and fast twitch fibers. These fibers are skeletal muscles which work in different very ways; Slow Twitch Slow fibers are more effective at using oxygen and produce more ATP. This means they can work continuously for long periods of time. However they are much sower than fast muscles, hence the name. Fast Twitch Fast twitch fibers use anaerobic metabolism to produce fuel, they are better at generating short bursts of strength or speed than slow muscles. However, they become tired more quickly. Fast twitch fibers do generally produce the same amount of force during contractions as slow muscles do, however their name refers the the fact they can work more rapidly. |
Cardiac MuscleCardiac muscle makes up the heart. It has a very important function to pump blood at high pressure to ensure it travels all the way around the body. The cardiac muscle does this by contracting and relaxing rhythmically. Cardiac muscle cells are branching chains of cells with striations. They are often Y-shaped with a central nucleus. They also have intercalated discs for attachment to each other.

Smooth Muscle Smooth muscle is found to line hollow organs such as the stomach or intestines. Smooth muscle controls slow, involuntary movements these include contraction of the smooth muscle tissue in the walls of the stomach and intestines. The muscle of the arteries contracts and relaxes to regulate the blood pressure and the flow of blood. These cells are striated but singularly fusiformed.

Skeletal MuscleSkeletal muscles are found around bones and joints, they always work in pairs which are situated opposite each other; so that when one when one contracts the other will relax. The function of these tissues is move your bones around joints and help to keep you upright. They also prevent your bones from dislocating. These cells are called striated because of their light and dark bands. The cells are long and cylindrical with many nuclei around the edges.
